- What can happen to a pet that is given free to a casual, uncommitted owner?
It’s a disturbing fact of life that some people abuse and kill animals. Free To Good Home ads offer a constant supply of new victims. Two recent examples include young men who obtained pets from such ads and then brutally tortured and killed the animals. While we’d like for every animal to live its natural life as a cherished family member, we realize this is not always the case. If you’ve ever browsed Craigslist, you’ve likely seen ads offering animals “free to a good home” or for sale via a “re-homing” fee.
In December of 2010, Louisville Metro Police arrested 24-year-old Alex Phelps for torturing and killing cats. He responded to “Free To Good Home” ads and convinced owners that he’d provide their pets with a loving home. Knopp commented, “"He knew all the right things to say. He said he volunteered for the Humane Society, fostering cats." If you’ve tried these things and still can’t find someone to adopt your pet, call your local animal shelter or rescue organization and find out their policy. Most shelters and rescues will have a policy on how long they keep animals before euthanizing and many will work diligently with other rescues to find fosters and placements. Animals not spayed or neutered are often obtained by puppy mill owners to serve as breeding dogs.

Your vet has numerous people who are looking for a new pet. Ask if you can post the animal on the bulletin board. If they have dogs, are they inside, outside, do they have a fenced yard? These dogs should have a record with their veterinarian, so ask about them when you call. For whatever reason, you have found yourself in a situation where you can’t keep your beloved furry family member and you want to find them a really good home. Money isn’t important – you just want them to be loved and cherished the way they deserve to be and you’ve run out of family or friends who are willing to take them.

We often do a home visit prior to finalizing an adoption. This usually gives a good sense of the type of home environment where your pet would be living, particularly if the family has other pets. If you’re unable to do a visit yourself, you may be able to elicit the assistance of a local rescue organization. Even if you know you will be unable to do the visit, still ask the applicant if they would object to you visiting their home prior to the adoption.

Be sure to tell them the situation, that the animal are vet checked, spayed/neutered etc. Let them know that you too will charge the rescue groups adoption fee, and the money will go to them, not you. Rescue groups will also help you along with the screening process. Free animals are sometimes obtained as food for pet snakes and even, at times, to be eaten by humans.

Earlier this year David Williford was arrested for getting free and low-cost pets from Craigslist, torturing and killing them, and then eating them. Some of the animals were starved to death and there were bones found all around his home. He was charged with twelve counts of animal cruelty against rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, and dogs. Dog fighters will often target “free to good home” ads to find cats, kittens, puppies and submissive dogs that they will use as bait to train other dogs to be aggressive killers. Some larger dogs are trained to be fighters, as well, and if they lose a fight they are brutallypunishedandleft to die. In today’s disposable society, a person who’s willing to pay an adoption fee is indicating more serious interest than someone who takes an animal just because it’s free.

Let the family know what type of food you are feeding the animal, which litter to use etc. If the animal are strays that you have found, be sure you have done everything in your power to find the owner. Here are some tips to help locate the owner of a an animal that you have found. Write letters to the editors of local papers, informing readers of the dangers of Free To Good Home ads.

Dealers pick up stray or free-roaming animals and even steal animals right out of their own backyards. They also procure “spent” dogs and cats from breeders and obtain animals who are advertised in “free to a good home” ads. Ask the person to sign a contract promising committing to provide the pet with a safe and loving home, adequate food, and veterinary care. If you’re in a position to take the animal back if the person changes his/her mind, include that as a stipulation. The most important step is to ask for a vet reference and then call the vet to verify that their current pets are properly cared for, vaccinated, on heartworm preventative, spayed/neutered, etc.

Veterinary care may be denied since they may figure they’ll just “get another one” if this one dies. As rescuers, we’ve heard horror stories of pets that were adopted by “caring” families, only to be chained outside and forgotten. I’d also find out if other people in the house want another pet.If they don’t, I probably wouldn’t let them adopt my pet. Because it’s likely your animal would get harmed, given away or taken to a shelter after a short time.

Most people have good intentions when they advertise a cat or dog as “free to a good home.” They care what happens to the animal and are not interested in making money. All they want to do is find a nice family that is willing to give the pet a loving, responsible home. The tragedy occurs when the animal is mistakenly put into a situation where it is neglected, abandoned, abused, or even sold for lab experimentation. Sadly, this sort of thing happens thousands of times each day across America. As much as we don’t want to believe it, there are disturbed people in the world who enjoy hurting helpless animals. These types of animal abusers will search for free animals on sites like Craigslist only to take pleasure in torturing and killing these animals.
Once you hand an animal over, the situation is out of your control, and there’s no way for you to know what may happen. These cases are proof that no matter how desperate you are, you should never resort to giving away an animal to someone you don’t know and trust. With guidance and effort, pets can usually accompany their families on moves. Please see our report on Renting With Pets for more information. Many behavioral problems can be resolved with the help of a knowledgeable trainer or consultant. And while you may not feel you have enough time to provide your pet with an ideal life, consider if it’s better than the alternative.
This simply entails calling their veterinarian and asking if their pets are all current on vaccinations and are spayed or neutered. If they are, that’s a good indication they will take proper care of your pet. These people collect animals from freebie ads to resell for profit in flea markets and online ads.
